Monaco (4/3)

Our first port led us to a place I never even thought about going to - and am not even sure I truly realized where it was located, but I can now say I went to Monaco. One of many places on our trip I was so glad I didn't have to drive in. The roads were all so narrow and uphill. But so green and peaceful. It just felt like things couldn't go wrong there. I have no idea what the crime rate is or anything like that, but is sure didn't feel like there was much, if any. There were a couple of things that I wondered - where do the kids get to play (I didn't see any parks and it seemed like there were only apartments) and where do people do their shopping (we only saw a pastry shop, but not really any other types of stores). The casino there (while I don't gamble) pretty much supports their economy. The people don't even pay taxes because the casino is able to take care of all of that.
Being pulled into the port at Savona, Italy.
"The Turtle." It is really just a big rock out in the middle of the sea, but it does look cool.
There were all kinds of operating monasteries on the way into Monaco. They were pretty to look at - and not necessarily something I thought about still being around.
I never thought about cactus plants being in Europe and yet they were everywhere.
Isn't it just the most beautiful little place. It's not a big country, but they make the most of the area they have.
All I can say is "Wow." That's what I thought when I was looking out the window and we approached. It's still what I think when I look at the pictures.
The Oceanographic Museum - we didn't take the time to go inside, but we were told it has a very impressive exhibit. I thought it was a very impressive building.
The royal gardens.
The Cathedral. This would be where Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier were married - and later buried.
We did have people light candles, but there is something about it that doesn't quite feel right to me - more because in some way it feels like I am disrespecting someone elses' beliefs by doing something I don't fully understand than that I think it's wrong - I don't think it's weird. I actually think it's kind of cool, but maybe I put too much thought into it.
She looks so peaceful and pretty.
Prince Rainier's grave. Grace Kelly was right next to him, but unfortunately I had a blond moment as I was walking by that and because it didn't say "Grace Kelly" it didn't dawn on me it was her's. Maybe the Gracia and the flowers and being right next to this one would have been clues for me to catch on before I did, but I can say I saw it - I just can't share it with you.
The Palace. I was a little bit disappointed we didn't get to go inside. I don't know that tours have ever been part of their policy, but I would have liked to go in.
The port right outside the palace. The yachts were insane there. There is definitely some money in this place.
The guard doing his march.
It was just such a cool tree. I couldn't get the whole thing, but I love trees that don't grow "normally."
Like I said, the yachts show there is a little bit of money going on here.
And then we had to leave to go to our next stop. It was just a little bit sad.
But on our way out of town, we did get to watch these guys a little bit.
