Memorial Day Weekend

I love Memorial Day! It's not just the day off from work, it's the whole purpose behind it. Remembering those who have gone before and those who have served to defend what is so important to me and this country. It's an incredible thing. Every year, my family actually goes to four cemeteries to put flowers on graves. However, because Dad was still on "house arrest" following his surgery, the task for the Salt Lake graves fell to me. Actually, the only request was that I went to Grandma and Grandpa Ottley's graves and when Dad could leave town, Mom will take him to the other cemeteries. I am pretty sure I could have found all of the graves, since I've gone almost every year since returning from my mission, but I would have hated to have missed anyone. So Saturday I went out to the cemetery (where I had to laugh to myself at the sale - buy three plots and get the fourth free). It was cool to listen to the bag piper play while I did our family flowers and found the flag for Grandpa. It was also very nice to see someone else had been there and put some flowers on before I got out there.

After doing the grave and calling in to find out they didn't need me for a shift at Build A Bear, I was able to head home. This was a very important trip - see Dad after his surgery (I really thought he would have been more down than he was) and meet Ryder. I can't go too long without being introduced! It worked out quite well as we got to babysit Briley while her parents went to a movie, which meant they had to come back with him to pick her up.
Not sure what the game really was, but it's amazing what this little girl can find to entertain herself - and us.
Ryder Colsten. He gets a look on his face that's such relief when you put him on his tummy.
(Cell phone cameras are not always the best at getting the "action" shots!) Briley LOVES her little brother. We commented his first words will be "Briley, go away" and he's not going to recognize her from a distance. She loves him to distraction, which may or may not be a good thing.
Preparing for our concert.
Getting ready to go home. He wasn't quite sure he liked his car seat, since he was awake.
On Monday, the only Cache Valley cemetery we go to is the Clarkston Cemetery. Both of my Mom's parents are from that area and we have a lot of family out there. This year I actually took pictures (and had AJ take several of the pictures) of our family headstones so we can use them at a family reunion in August - so I won't be putting any of them in here.
The most famous "resident" of Clarkston is Martin Harris. He's a pretty familiar story in Mormon history and this would be the site of the Martin Harris pageant, which is apparently now an every other year occurence instead of every year. (There is an amphitheater in the cemetery to accommodate this.)
While out in Clarkston, we visited with Aunt Barbara. She looked so good. It's kind of fun getting the pictures of Grandma and Grandpa with their brothers/sisters.
One of the Clarkston Boy Scouts did an Eagle Scout project where he had a memorial built for the Veterans from Clarkston.
Grandpa and I think it's three of his brothers are on the memorial. However, there's apparently no spell checker/fact checker for this memorial and Grandpa's name is misspelled. It should be Wallace.
Playing on the playground before heading back into town.
Russ getting into the action, playing with his kids.
Maya demonstrates her abilities - sometimes she still looks to little to be doing this stuff, but the attitude is still there in spades!
AJ attempts (and succeeds) with the single pole slide.
Last, but not least, we have Zach doing his job in there.
Aunt Beth and Grandma meet Ryder. He's pretty long, but what do you expect when both of your parents are 6'2"?
Ryder discovered his thumb. And it kept him happy for almost a full half hour. I enjoyed the cuddling!
Hollie and Briley play together. It gave me extra time to hold Ryder, so no problems from me.
Isn't that just the sweetest face? He was just content, which is nice.
Sort of talking - or at least making cute sounds and faces.
Intent on whatever was on the TV at the time.
One of my favorite moments of the weekend. She did this when I was working on Brooklyn's quilt too. I put the needle through the material and she pulls it out. She needs to work on realizing my face is behind her arm when she brings the needle back up, but apparently that's part of the reason why I'll wear glasses when we work on a project together. She would really like to do all of the stitching, but I can only do so much picking.
We took Brian, Hollie, Briley, Ryder, and Dad out to the cemetery so they could see where our family is. Trying to explain to Briley why she shouldn't be jumping and climbing on all the headstones was a little bit hard - makes me glad I am only the aunt.
While we were walking through the cemetery, Hollie was holding Ryder in his little pack and he was truly thinking since he was against her he should be eating and got offended when the answer was no. We put him in his car seat and discovered he's only two weeks old, but he holds a grudge and he has the pout down. But isn't he still cute (you can see the furrowed brow and everything). The best part was when I was talking to him and he kind of rolled his eyes and turned his head away from my voice. He was happy again eventually. And it was just a really great Memorial Day weekend.
