John and Sally did their own thing in DC today. Jen and I took the opportunity to travel down to Richmond and do our own
exploring. We started out at
Maymont. All we knew about this place was that it looked wonderful on the
brochure. We got there only to discover that the main house and shop are closed on Mondays. We decided to explore the grounds and possible come back another day to do the house. We figured it might be some kind of pretty garden. Four hours later, we discovered it was actually three gardens - an English one, an Italian one, and a Japanese one. We didn't really do much in the Italian garden because the Richmond home school students were doing their school pictures. All we had to say as we left was that the house had a lot to live up to and we would definitely be coming back.

Sundial in the English garden.
The dial say "Count none but sunny hours."

Isn't it a beautiful fountain?

I actually did pretty good about taking pictures of myself this go round (I usually don't do that because I hate to have my picture taken and much prefer to be behind the camera). Besides when the background is like that, why wouldn't you want to take advantage of it?

The old barn. It's converted into something now, but it's was locked up so I couldn't tell you for sure what.

I really like gazebos.

Sneak peeks and from a little bit of a distance and still beautiful.

Doesn't this seem like the perfect place for a balcony scene from some fabulous, romantic movie? That would mean there was someone other than Jen taking the picture or at least standing by her.

First view of the waterfall. I need more words than just beautiful, fabulous, and amazing.

A little bit of lounging for the camera.

At this point in time we had no idea how this waterfall came to be, we just knew it was incredible.

Jen didn't necessarily mean to just do a head shot, and I don't mean to sound conceited, but it really did
turn out nice.

I don't know if this is zen or anything like that, but it's the Japanese garden and it was very peaceful to wander in.

Jen is more adventuresome than I am and was willing to take her shoes off to get into the water in the grotto. I, on the other hand, don't really want to have my feet in green water.

I did like the grotto though. Can you blame me?

Jen's pin-up girl picture. It all started with trying to get her feet washed off from being in the grotto.

Alright, so I don't look too
comfortable, but realistically, as cool as these tree roots were to look at they truly did not offer any great place to sit.

Still very peaceful. Although I couldn't necessarily relax here for too long, running water and all.

The guest entryway into the house.

I would love to have the wrap around porch and it's just incredibly.

Standing on the carriage steps, just hoping for a ride.

Magnolia trees - my favorite. A little late in the season for blooms, but pretty nonetheless. And pretty easy to
climb.

My turn. When the branches are this low, you have to take advantage. It makes it a lot easier to get down too.
